The January Blahs.

The buzz and excitement of Christmas is over, New Years has come and gone and all we seem to be left with is a lot more toys and garbage.
Well of course there is more than that but January does seem to have a dull ring to it doesn’t it? There isn’t much going on in the community other than a whole lot of hockey and curling. It seems to have gotten a full ten degrees colder and the indoors looks more and more inviting while the little ones are driving you nuts from being cooped up day after day. So what on earth is the solution?

For us the solution is clearing out the cobwebs, if you can believe it. As the tree comes down and the boxes get packed up and put away the task of getting everything back into the box it came out of becomes a creative art assignment and sometimes requires a lesson in minimalistic design. It is surprisingly easy to get a toddler interesting in sorting out a drawer. We have three boxes: keep, donate and throw away. Preschoolers seem to get an extra kick out of this because they get to have a say in what goes on. We start with the most boring drawers (socks) and work our way up to the more exciting ones (toys) and only do one or two drawers/areas a day, this way it seems like the kids tend to not lose interest so quickly and we can stretch the game out for the length of January. By the time the month is through my house is wonderfully organized and we have a big box of things for the hospital thrift store. Another bonus of this sneaky task is that the kids find a renewed interest in toys they had forgotten about or gotten bored of.

I seem to spend a lot of time on the floor in January. Maybe that is why I don’t mind being cooped up quite so much since I am seeing my little world through a whole new perspective.
