Green, green, green. Â There are so many different ideas that you can think of when you hear the word “green”: the colour, being environmentally-conscious, St. Patrick’s Day, money, shamrocks…
March 17th is the feast day of St. Patrick and a national holiday of Ireland.  Often, people are seen wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day.  When trying to learn more about why that is, I stumbled across the reason given by Wikipedia:  “Originally the color associated with St. Patrick was blue, not green.[6] However over the years the color green and its association with St. Patrick’s day grew. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration of St Patrick’s Day as early as the 17th century.[7] He is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pre-Christian Irish, and the wearing and display of shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs have become a ubiquitous feature of the day.[8][9] Then in 1798 in hopes of making a political statement Irish soldiers wore full green uniforms on March 17th in hopes of catching attention with their unusual fashion gimmick.[10] The phrase “the wearing of the green”, meaning to wear a shamrock on one’s clothing, derives from the song of the same name.”
I found some great activities that you can do with kids to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, whether or not you are Irish. Â Also, here at KamloopsParents.Com, we will have a green-theme. Â There will be a St. Patrick’s Day craft Tuesday, and a St. Patrick’s Day recipe for Wednesday. Â So, be sure to come back and check it out!
Here are some of the things that I found:
Kissed Blarney Stone Leprechaun Handprint Rainbow St. Patrick’s Day Bunting
St. Patrick’s Day Games Rice Art Green Peanut Butter Marshmallow Treats St. Patrick’s Day Mobile Kirigami (Hat)
Please consider sharing your family’s St. Patrick’s Day fun on KamloopsParents.Com.
You can e-mail your ideas and family fun to elizabeth@kamloopsparents.com.
