As you could probably tell by the previous cloth diaper-related posts on this site, I am a cloth diaperer.  I like it.  I love the cutie patootie cloth diapers and that fluffy cloth diaper bum.  I love that I don’t have to dump a pail full of dirty diapers into my garbage every day.  I don’t love washing them or dealing with dirties, but who likes laundry?  I don’t know anyone that would confess to enjoying laundry.  It never ends!  Never!  Anyhow, cloth diapering isn’t for everyone and I totally understand that.

Despite the fact that not everyone wants to try cloth diapering their kids, a much-less-intense way to make a difference for the amount of diaper waste we produce – swim diapers!  Whenever I go to the pool, there are always several swim diapers in the garbage in the family change room.  They have been worn once, lots of the time they haven’t even been actually “used” (in the diaper sense) and tossed.  Swim diapers are a great way to reduce our impact on the planet, just for when we go swimming.  The diapers can be used as a regular diaper cover, as well, if matched with the right insert.

My kids each have swim diapers and for the longest time (up until last week, actually), that was all my seven-month-old son wore in the pool!  He didn’t even have swim shorts (I was too lazy to find some).  Swim diapers are similar to diaper covers because they are thin, lightweight and made of water-resistant fabric with a light inner layer of mesh.  They are designed to hold anything that “happens” while you are in the pool.  Once you pull the diaper off you need to rinse it out right away, seal the velco closures, then toss it into your laundry with the rest of your swim gear (on low heat with no softeners).  Just like that.  No garbage!  What a great way to make a difference!

Before I heard about swim diapers, my eldest son had probably only actually “used” his diaper, in the pool, about a handful of times but how many pool diapers did I throw away? Quite a few.  Much more than I would have, if I had invested in a cloth swim diaper.

Lizzie Bits Baby Co carries so many wonderful cloth diapers and cloth diapering products.  They also carry Bummis Swimmi swim diapers.  These diapers are great.  They are available in so many fun prints and they are available in a number of sizes, as well.  Jenn, from Lizzie Bits Baby Co, has generously donated a Swimmi diaper in the clownfish print (Finding Nemo, anyone?) to give away to one lucky reader.  This cute swim diaper is size Medium so it will fit from 15 to 22 lbs.  My son is wearing his well-loved Medium Swimmi in the pictures above and he weighs 22lbs, so I think that it will even last beyond that weight!

If you are interested in winning the Swimmi that I have to give away, there are a few ways that you can get your name into the draw…

1) Check out Lizzie Bits Baby Co and tell me how much it costs for one Swimmi.

2) Leave a comment to say that you have read this post.

3) Tell me how many disposable swim diapers you could prevent going into the landfill if you had a reusable swim diaper, or how many you do save with the reusablemaking-a-difswim diaper you already use…

4) Leave a comment telling me what my little man is holding in his hands, in the pictures.

A swim diaper would be a great gift, so you don’t have to use it, yourself (well, for your baby) to enter.  Let’s help to reduce!!  This draw will be open to comments until 10pm on May 13th, then drawn by random.org and notified by e-mail.
