Welcome to 2011. Let’s kick off the year right with one of my all time favorite parent/kid friendly artists Montreal Folk band Lake of Stew.

Lake of Stew are a 6 piece acoustic string band who blend their voices together to create a sound that is fun and sometimes makes you want to giggle.

My daughter and I had the good fortune to see them play a small acoustic show this summer where we were invited to sing, stomp and clap along. There was a kazoo solo, at least one banjo, wash tub base, a quick demonstration of how an accordion works and even a crowd vote on what the last two songs would be.

What makes this group so fun for the kids (besides the kazoo) is that they sing songs about simple recognizable things like bears, vegetables, even an armadillo. Yes there is an armadillo song. Can you guess what it’s called? The lyrics are clear, harmonious and easy enough that after a few listens you and the little ones can sing along.

Their second album ‘Sweet As Pie’ is a frequent play in our car and one of the few that the kids request on a regular basis.
Have a listen for yourself I’ve included their first ever music video as a little preview for you. I am sure you won’t be disappointed. Check them out at Lake of Stew MySpace Page. Happy Listening!
