I always was one to sing along. Whether it be the radio in my car, background music in a checkout line or the music in my head at the park. When it comes to singing I’m not shy. Which is likely why it was only natural that I sang to my kids pretty much from the moment they were born.
In virtually no time I found that perhaps not all my lyrical material was kid-friendly. Lullabies and bedtime songs quickly entered my repertoire and became the songs I sang while doing the dishes. Not being one to care for the ‘norm’ I started digging up lyrics to the longest and more obscure of the childhood melodies.
Over the years my kids have requested that I learn new songs, make up songs and in times of crisis sing old favorites again sometimes they even sing along. Through this ‘song awareness’ as I call it we have trained our ears to pick-out potential songs from our everyday lives and occurrences. Many more of these would likely make it into our repertoire if I owned a smart phone or even a cell phone but relying solely on my delicate short term memory we have managed to garner a few gems over the years.
And this week I’d like to share with you some of our favorite sing-along songs. These songs never fail to make me smile and singing them to my kids seems to ground all of us especially after an evening of a trying bedtime routine.
The first group I sang when the kids were really little and the second are the ones we sing now that they are a little older. As I mentioned they do sometimes request some of the older ones, particularly when they are feeling rough.
And of course I created a YouTube Playlist for your enjoyment. My kids really enjoyed the creation of this post because they got to hear some of their old forgotten favorites again, so thanks for inspiring me to write it : )
