Recipe

8 apples (or there about, see explanation below)

1 cup water

½ cup sugar

1 tsp cinnamon

This is so easy and there are a few ways your kids can get involved.

First, core and slice the apples.  Using a small kid’s knife (aka not sharp), let the kids cut the apple slices into chunks.  The chunk size doesn’t matter and the kids were happy to be helping. I didn’t peel the apples and the skins were mostly dissolved by the time the applesauce cooked.  Of course you could peel them if you prefer.

Place all the apples in the crockpot.  I am not sure exactly how many apples we used because the kids kept eating slices as they were chopping (not really a downside in my opinion) and I kept grabbing extra apples to core and slice.

Next, add the sugar, cinnamon and water to the crockpot.  I allowed the kids to measure and pour in the ingredients.  I stirred everything together and turned the crockpot to high and set the timer for 4 ½ hours.  I turned the crockpot to warm until afternoon snack.

Before serving I poured the applesauce into another bowl and provided the kids with a potato masher to mash up the mixture.  It was a little runny, so next time I would use a little less water.

We ate it with cheddar cheese slices but it would have been delicious over vanilla ice cream.  It tasted like apple pie without the crust and oh the smell – yum!

Sorry no pictures.  The steps happened so quickly and the kids were pretty eager to get eating; there wasn’t time for pictures.
