As the Kamloops Arts Council celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, you can expect an Art in the Park on Canada Day that’s more action-packed than ever.
Art in the Park is a part of the City of Kamloops Canada Day celebrations along with Kamloops Multicultural Society’s Folkfest at Riverside Park. This year, more than 100 artists and artisans will show and sell their work. This juried show promises a variety of quality art and fine crafts. Purchase one-of-a-kind pieces from local as well as select regional artists and artisans.
Performances will be taking place on the grass stage on the southeast side of the park, including sword demos from the Shire of Ramsgaard and the Djembe Django drummers, Gilda Lily and the Chorus Girls, Mozaik Fusion bellydance, 11-year-old drummer Oscar Evely, and Lindy in the Loops.
Those looking to get in on the action can show their own talents at the Open Mic Tent by the waterpark, hosted by Alicia Ashcroft. Participate in an arts activity with 4Cats Arts Studio or any number of other community arts groups. With local indigenous artist Chris Bose, make prints of trout, salmon and traditional plants in the Secwepemcu’uluw — honouring water, the fish and the land that is our heritage.
Clement Yeh’s portrait exhibition Drawing on Memory, featuring familiar Kamloops faces, will be on display in the air-conditioned Heritage House, along with a Heritage Fair display from Lloyd George students. Plus, at the KAC booth by the waterpark, view the Kamloops Arts Council’s history artfully documented on a 50-year timeline created by Connections: The Art of Storytelling and TRU Service Learning students.
