Tumbleweed Toys: Canadian Savings!

Meet Vanessa Gammel!

She is the new owner of Tumbleweed Toys, Kamloops’ largest specialty toy and game store!  Tumbleweed Toys is located in Sahali Mall.

My kids and I love to go and check it out.  They are drawn in by the creative displays and fabulous toys out for them to test!  They don’t want to leave!

Vanessa is putting together some fun new things for Tumbleweed Toys; she is dreaming of great things for the store, including a nursing-friendly area, comfy chairs to sit and rest, an enclosed play area and new fun displays to captivate!  Vanessa, thanks for your commitment to children of all ages in Kamloops – it sounds great!

Currently, Vanessa is showcasing the fabulous Canadian-themed and Canadian-made products that she carries in the shop.

You can get 15% off selected Canadiana merchandise, while you shop at Tumbleweed Toys until July 4th, 2011.

Some of my favourite games and products from Tumbleweed Toys fall into the category of Canadian-made!

Vanessa says, “I have always been obsessed with high quality developmental toys for children and owning a toy store was a long time dream of mine – it has finally come to be a reality. I am an Early Childhood Educator and I have 3 children ages 10, 5 & 2. My background includes running a daycare, teaching preschool, working at a family resource program, inspecting daycare facilities, teaching some E.C.E. classes and being a stay-at-home mom for a few years too.   You could say my area of expertise is child development and I am putting that to good use in selecting unique products for Tumbleweed Toys.

I am very passionate about providing families and children with safe, high quality products that encourage imaginative play and learning.”

If you haven’t yet been into Tumbleweed Toys, I would suggest that you check it out. There are always great things to look at and play with.  As well, Vanessa offers special discounts to those that are supplying their classroom or childcare facility!

If you are wondering a little more about Tumbleweed Toys and the inspiration behind the store…. it is Safe, Sustainable and Inspired… just the way we want  our kids to play!

Safe—the toys in the store meet government standards for safety.  We source products that are free of BPA phalates, lead , PVC and other known toxins.  We also strive to sell products that are high quality that won’t break easily  and are safe to play with.

Happy Birthday Kamloops Momma Mag!

Courtney Charlton of Kamloops Momma Magazine, brings you this post.

“As a kid, birthdays were a big deal in my house.  I am, after all, the daughter of a cake decorator/preschool instructor/Parks and Rec coordinator/overall awesome momma. From waking up to my house fully decorated in an ingenious theme to my very favourite dinner (turkey, of course), every second of my birthday was special. It truly was ‘my day.’

And whether a ‘Monster Mash’ dance party or a haunted house theme (complete with a homemade coffin filled with treasure and buried in our garden for us to dig up), my parties were always the party of the year.

Now, when I say, ‘as a kid,’ I actually mean as a teenager too! There’s no shame in a bunch of 17 year olds racing around a house looking for treasure, right? But then one year, everything changed.

BFing Friendly Kamloops:
Mighty Oak Midwifery

Nursing In Public.  Does anyone else find it funny that the acronym is N.I.P.?

When you have a hungry breastfeeding baby, it just becomes a reality for many Moms.  I know that I am not the only Mom who raised my infants with the “if you are hungry I will feed you” mentality.  As our infants tend to dominate our actions when Mom is the only one that can meet their mealtime needs, our infants can definitely control where (and when) we go out!  Kamloops is a fantastic community for families and so in an effort to support BFing Moms out there, Mighty Oak Midwifery and KamloopsParents.Com are joining forces to bring you a Breastfeeding Friendly Kamloops Directory.

You can look forward to it being linked in our directory, in the near future!

Until then, Kamloops Parents, it’s up to us to build it!!  Where have you felt that you were welcome to nurse?  Are there places in Kamloops that have space for Moms to have a seat (change a diaper) and feed their little one?  The goal of this directory is not to put down those businesses that have not yet come to realize the value in providing comfort to Moms with young babies, it is about THANKING those businesses that are putting themselves forward as a business that is accommodating and supportive of parents with young babies that need to feed and change their little ones).

A few months ago, I put the word out to see if we could begin to put together the names of places that are breastfeeding friendly and here’s what we got…

  • Well I don’t know exactly but every time we’ve eaten at Flavours of India
  • the art we are….my daughter and I eat there often 🙂
  • I have breast fed in White Spot, Denny’s, Montana’s, Red Robins, and Nandos

  • Amsterdam (the place in Valley View)

  • Restaurant at Zellers is definitely BF friendly.

  • Alive and Well Massage Therapy Clinic- pre- and post-natal massage and infant massage are offered, so of course we encourage the little ones to snack 🙂

  • Sears is great. They have a BF’ing room that has a rocking chair, sink and changetable.

  • I know this isn’t in town but for those going to Kelowna the Orchard Park Mall has an awesome BF room with a small kids bathroom, toys, and games for slightly older siblings. The only way in is with a key from customer service.

  • Hot House Bistro! They even have a sticker on the window by their door to indicate that they are breast-feeding friendly.
  • Walmart used to have a nice comfy chair in the baby section….maybe it wasn`t meant for nursing but I used it!

  • Never had any problems at Swiss Pastry Shop downtown. Staff is also very accommodating with kids (strollers, etc.) and have always had a great attitude toward them being there, which is pretty cool given that the place is pretty tight quarters.

  • Aberdeen Mall has an awesome family washroom.  It has a BF chair like the hospital one.

Let’s keep it building!  If you have positive nursing experiences in a local business, please let us know!  Email elizabeth@kamloopsparents.com or comment on this post to help us build the directory!

Mighty Oak Midwifery is proud to provide breastfeeding friendly services and support.  If you have any questions, you can contact them.  You can also enjoy their monthly “Mom’s Morning Out” on the first Wednesday of June, July and August at Prince Charles Park at 11am.  Their facebook page shares more information.
