A strong earthy, deep-rooted loving red to represent the parents, and a fresh, soft new-born green to represent the young children (the subtle sage green of Kamloops hills). The red leaves of the logo are the parents: a couple, a mother (pregnant as shown by the 'bump' on the leaf) and a single parent. The children are between them and together the entire Kamloops “family' is centred/grounded by one focal point—family living and unity. As a team they present an exuberant yet simple flower... which speaks to a harmonious life and what true beauty really is all about—our relationships with eachother. The logo also evokes a sense of movement... the action and activity of a family in motion, “doing' things together.

Book: If you Give a Pig a Party

Author: Laura Numeroff

Illustrator: Felicia Bond

For Ages: 2-5

Where to Get it: We got this book as a gift, but I found it available to purchase online at Chapters and Amazon

My daughter just got this book at her fourth birthday party a couple of weeks ago, and we’ve read it a dozen times already!  It’s a quick read, in fact, I think it would be appropriate for “early readers” so I’ll be adding it to the list of books to read with her when she reaches that stage.  The art-work is amazing and there’s even a hide-and-seek page in the middle of the book, where you have to find Pig’s friends who are hiding on the pages.  Too cute!  This author has also written several similar themed books, such as If You Give a Pig a Pancake,  If You Give a Mouse a
Cookie
and If You Give a Dog a Donut.  A Spanish edition of this book is also available.

When I first asked my four year-old what her favorite part of this book was, she immediately flipped to the hide-and-seek page.  She also said that she liked the part where Pig and her friends go on the roller coaster at the street fair.

Books for BC Babies was a provincial program that gave every newborn child in BC a bag containing a boardbook, a CD, and information about early literacy and the local public library.  In 2009 the Provincial Government cut public library funding by 22%.  One of the programs that was cut was Books for BC Babies.  Luckily, the Youth Services/Literacy Librarian at the TNRD Library System was able to bring back this wonderful program with help from The Kamloops Foundation, Interior Savings Credit Unions, and the British Columbia Library Association.  The TNRD Library System now has over 1000 bags to give out to newborns in 2011!  They are extending the age to those born in 2010 as well, since those babies were missed due to the cuts. + READ MORE
