Family Art Saturday
February 20, 2016 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pmFree
Drop into Family Art Saturdays, a free family event that includes tours and activities in our galleries as well as innovative art workshops in our studios.
In the Central Galleries, experience Midnight Sun Camera Obscura, a contemporary exploration of the camera obscura, and Out of Sight, an exhibition of historical photographs by Eadweard Muybridge and Harold Edgerton that expand our understanding of time and motion through the still image. In The Cube, a new project by Thompson Rivers University students is on view–Live Stream: Optical Rendering. Together, the exhibitions offer an opportunity to understand the history of optics and photography and contemporary approaches to these subjects.
In our studios, experiment with the science and art behind the persistence of vision by building your own thaumatropes and phenakistoscopes. These historic optical toys were the building blocks for modern animation techniques and are some of the earliest examples of stop motion animation.
In addition to interactive tours and hands-on workshops, this Saturday will also be the last chance to experience artist Mike Yuhasz’s mobile camera obscura project, the Vanscura. This passenger van turned into a camera obscura allows participants to experience a unique audio-visual tour throughout Kamloops from within a moving camera. Inside the van, passengers will listen to the artist’s “Super Natural” audio tour while watching a projected moving image of the inverted landscape of downtown Kamloops. Tours will leave from outside of the Kamloops Art Gallery on the hour from11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Participation is free for all ages but children will need to be accompanied by an adult. There are only four seats per tour, to reserve your place in advance call 250-377-2400.
No registration required.
