MEET THE INSTRUCTORS

Shamma Sabir: The eldest of the Sabir Sisters, Shamma is widely acknowledged as one of Canada’s best fiddlers. Shamma was the first and youngest female nominee ever to be invited to the Canadian Grand Masters Championships where she placed among Canada’s top fiddlers. A songwriter and composer with credits on many prestigious Canadian Fiddler’s albums, Shamma’s roots, folk and blues vocals, combined with her mastery on the fiddle, place her musical flair into a sphere of its own. Shamma is currently a member of The Trips, one of Kelowna’s finest musical offerings.

John Kastelic: John started playing violin at age 7, motivated by a desire to be different than his older, piano-playing sisters. He has not looked back since. John has studied and played classic violin and more recently, viola, which is now the instrument “closest to my heart.” He studied viola at UBC with David Harding, initially majoring in performance, and has a degree with a double major in composition and musical scholarship. His time at university also introduced him to Balinese gamelan music, which he calls “a tremendous source of pleasure and inspiration in my life.” John has been playing Balinese music since 2009. Some may also recognize John as a former instructor at KISSM.

KISSM and partners are grateful for sponsorship of this event from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.
