Canada’s official submission to the 87th Academy Awards foreign film category, tells the story of a feisty widowed single mom who finds herself burdened with the full-time custody of her explosive 15-year-old ADHD son. As they try to make ends meet and struggle with their unpredictable ménage, the peculiar, new girl across the street, Kyla, benevolently offers her help. She inserts herself into their household and together, they find a new sense of balance, and hope is regained.
“[S]hould there be one, just one subject I’d know more than any other, one that would unconditionally inspire me, and that I love above all, it certainly would be my mother. And when I say
my mother, I think I mean THE mother at large, the figure she represents.”
“it’s the small scenes that really make Mommy memorable.”
“Anne Dorval and Suzanne Clément, are outstanding and their performances magnetic.”
Mommy doesn’t simply live up to expectation, it smashes right through it. It’s difficult to believe a work this accomplished, with this much nuance and this level of emotional and technical maturity, comes from such a young director but Dolan continues to impress and to prove that age really is nothing but a number.” -Marina Antunes, Quiet Earth
“A POWERFUL FILM ABOUT THE FEROCITY OF A MOTHER’S LOVE.”
-Mary Collins, Time Magazine
“A HEARTSWELLING, BREATHTAKING PIECE OF CINEMA.”
