Ethan Hawke is an utterly magnetic screen presence as Chet Baker, the legendary trumpeter and singer who, after becoming a jazz icon in the 1950s, became equally famous for his drug addiction. Born to be Blue reimagines Baker’s life as a mixture of factual and fictional events, picking up his story late in his career when — after years of heroin abuse, financial loss, and public disgrace — he stages a comeback.

“Upending the conventions of the musical rise-and-fall formula while still offering a relatively straightforward three-act narrative, the film is anchored by an Ethan Hawke performance that ranks among the best of his career.” – Variety

“Hawke embodies Baker with a high whisper of a voice, missing teeth and a quirky cadence. It’s a riveting performance from first scene to last.” – Roger Ebert

“Ethan Hawke is at his very best in Born to be Blue, a deeply felt and profoundly moving depiction of the relationship between art and addiction.” – We Got This Covered

“A soulful performance… I could absolutely see Hawke’s performance garnering attention from Gotham Independent Film Awards and Independent Spirit Awards voters, if not members of the Academy.” – Hollywood Reporter
