Rated 18A: sexual violence
Following a brutal rape, successful businesswoman, Michèle Leblanc, takes a bath, gets dressed, and joins friends for dinner. Instead of reporting the crime, she hunts down the ski-masked stranger herself. After repeated brushes with the brute, she becomes further entangled in a dangerous cat and mouse game that spirals out of control, threatening to consume them both. While the attack changes Michèle’s life forever, she refuses to be victimized. Though not for the faint of heart, this erotic, violent, perverse and oddly empowering revenge tale is anchored by a breathtaking performance from Isabelle Huppert.
“ELLE IS A COMPLEX PSYCHOLOGICAL PORTRAIT OF AN UNUSUAL WOMAN…THE SHEER BRILLIANCE AND MASTERY OF HUPPERT’S CONTROLLED, MULTIFACETED PERFORMANCE MAKES THE FILM A MOVIE THAT WILL INSPIRE DEBATE FOR DECADES TO COME”
“ELLE IS A PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER, A STRANGELY DRY-EYED MELODRAMA, A KINKY SEX FARCE AND, PERHAPS MOST PROVOCATIVELY, A SAVAGE COMEDY OF BOURGEOIS MANNERS. MOSTLY, THOUGH — INARGUABLY— IT IS A PLATFORM FOR THE ASTONISHING, ALMOST TERRIFYING TALENT OF ISABELLE HUPPERT.”
