This summer I had the pleasure of being introduced to one of Canada’s great unknown artists. Some of you may have see Danny Michel open up for Stuart McLean’s Vinyl Cafe Road Show a couple years ago. Seems Stuart was onto something because a short time later David Suzuki picked the title track of Danny’s album for his ‘Playlist for the Planet’. The album was entitled Feather Fur and Fin and I now own an autographed copy of it. + READ MORE

You would be hard pressed to find an adult who doesn’t have some level of awareness of who The Beatles are. Heck they probably even know John, Paul, George & Ringo by name. So why should you go out of your way to feed Beatles songs to your children at an early age?
One simple reason: They created simple, beautiful, quality music and a child who loves singing along to the Octopus’s Garden when they are 5 is probably more likely to appreciate the wide range of complexities music offers later in their lives. In short they are more likely to become a music lover.

Welcome to 2011. Let’s kick off the year right with one of my all time favorite parent/kid friendly artists Montreal Folk band Lake of Stew.
Lake of Stew are a 6 piece acoustic string band who blend their voices together to create a sound that is fun and sometimes makes you want to giggle.
My daughter and I had the good fortune to see them play a small acoustic show this summer where we were invited to sing, stomp and clap along. There was a kazoo solo, at least one banjo, wash tub base, a quick demonstration of how an accordion works and even a crowd vote on what the last two songs would be.

Welcome to a new monthly spot on Kamloops Parents where I will be reviewing, informing or otherwise recommending music that the whole family can enjoy.
This month I want to let you know about a children’s group that is about so much more than just music. They are a fantastic stage show, have an active YouTube channel and make music that educates while being fun to listen to. They are GoGoBonkers! and are made up of two hilarious guys Iain McLaren and Trevor Mason.
Their latest CD ‘Love the Land’ is 100% handmade right down to the sleeve and the sticker printed on the CD. I’ve seen them do it, it’s a labor of love. These guys are the real deal. They believe that the more children hear about how they can create a healthy future for their community the more they will be inspired to act. Their album contains rich enjoyable music with a message we could all learn a little from. ‘Planting a Garden’ is one of my favs. The song will be stuck in your head for a while but it’s ok because it’ll make you feel good and put a smile on your face. + READ MORE
