I always was one to sing along. Whether it be the radio in my car, background music in a checkout line or the music in my head at the park. When it comes to singing I’m not shy. Which is likely why it was only natural that I sang to my kids pretty much from the moment they were born.
In virtually no time I found that perhaps not all my lyrical material was kid-friendly. Lullabies and bedtime songs quickly entered my repertoire and became the songs I sang while doing the dishes. Not being one to care for the ‘norm’ I started digging up lyrics to the longest and more obscure of the childhood melodies.
Over the years my kids have requested that I learn new songs, make up songs and in times of crisis sing old favorites again sometimes they even sing along. Through this ‘song awareness’ as I call it we have trained our ears to pick-out potential songs from our everyday lives and occurrences. Many more of these would likely make it into our repertoire if I owned a smart phone or even a cell phone but relying solely on my delicate short term memory we have managed to garner a few gems over the years.
