Sing Alongs

I always was one to sing along. Whether it be the radio in my car, background music in a checkout line or the music in my head at the park. When it comes to singing I’m not shy. Which is likely why it was only natural that I sang to my kids pretty much from the moment they were born.

In virtually no time I found that perhaps not all my lyrical material was kid-friendly. Lullabies and bedtime songs quickly entered my repertoire and became the songs I sang while doing the dishes. Not being one to care for the ‘norm’ I started digging up lyrics to the longest and more obscure of the childhood melodies.

Over the years my kids have requested that I learn new songs, make up songs and in times of crisis sing old favorites again sometimes they even sing along. Through this ‘song awareness’ as I call it we have trained our ears to pick-out potential songs from our everyday lives and occurrences. Many more of these would likely make it into our repertoire if I owned a smart phone or even a cell phone but relying solely on my delicate short term memory we have managed to garner a few gems over the years.

Lake of Stew

Welcome to 2011. Let’s kick off the year right with one of my all time favorite parent/kid friendly artists Montreal Folk band Lake of Stew.

Lake of Stew are a 6 piece acoustic string band who blend their voices together to create a sound that is fun and sometimes makes you want to giggle.

My daughter and I had the good fortune to see them play a small acoustic show this summer where we were invited to sing, stomp and clap along. There was a kazoo solo, at least one banjo, wash tub base, a quick demonstration of how an accordion works and even a crowd vote on what the last two songs would be.

Seasonal Favorites

One of the things I look forward to most about Christmas is the music. Oh alright I look forward to an abundance of butter tarts too but I can enjoy the music with less guilt. I’d like to share some of my children’s favorites with you.

A seasonal album suggestion for you and a song list to check off on your Christmas music playlist. The album being ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas‘ by the Vince Guaraldi Trio.

While the fabulous jazz stylings probably won’t become a requested hit in the car or house it isn’t going to be complained about either. And it might just inspire your kids to request the much loved film that goes along with this sound track.

Cuddling up together and stirring some nostalgia into that hot cocoa always feels extra cozy.
